Butterfly Biosphere
Exploring the pleasures of the Nectar Dome
London, 2019: Londoners got their first ever chance to sip nectar while surrounded by butterflies. In partnership with Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, Bompas & Parr launched a unique butterfly biosphere in Mayfair's Grosvenor Square.
The world’s first Lepidopterarium combined butterfly ecology, nectar-tasting and an abundance of photo opportunities with myriad butterflies against a canvas of pink lighting and feature shimmering, iridescent décor – to match the insects’ vibrant colour scheme.
On arrival, visitors were invited to sip nectar made using fruit from flowering trees and to toast butterflies as the unsung heroes of pollination. This was followed by a guided walk with Wildlife Guardians who guided guests into the enchanting world of butterflies, developing a newfound appreciation of their essential role in nature while observing them hatch. Guests received a pair of rainbow spectacles to enhance their butterfly vision and could sit on a butterfly selfie throne that lent them a pair of brightly-coloured wings.
The experience highlighted the plight of London’s butterfly population – having declined by 76% over the last four decades – and demonstrated how capital dwellers could best help these winged friends.
